Dragon Arum is an tuberous perennial, typically grows to 3-4′ tall and features very attractive large dark green leaves (to 12″ long) that are often streaked with white. The leaves perch atop thick stalks decorated with a snakeskin pattern. Large, foul-smelling, maroon-purple flowers (each to as much as 24″ long and 8″ wide) appear above the leaves in late spring or early summer. The foul odor of the spathes, attracts flies for pollinating the flowers. Flowers are followed by green berries which mature to orange-red in fall.

Its large maroon flowers have a highly unpleasant fragrance, so plant it at the edge of the garden and away from open windows and doors.

However, this beauty is easy to grow, and if you can stand the smell, it provides an impressive focal point in your landscaping.

The best place to grow Dracunculus is in full or part sun in well-drained soil. Dragon lily does quite well when grown in containers.
