(Rubus idaeus) Perennial. An edible and medicinal shrub mainly grown for its sweet, tangy, juicy berries. Plants form thickets of biennial canes that benefit from yearly spring pruning. The leaves can be harvested for herbal tea and berries makes delectable jams and desserts.

To Grow:

Direct sow outdoors in prepared soil in fall, planting ¼” deep and 10’ apart in groups of 3-4 seeds per plant. Keep soil moist. To start indoors: Soak seeds for 24 hrs before sowing. Seeds require stratification. Warm/moist stratification for 60 days at 72-75 degrees. Then cold/moist stratification for 60 days in the refrigerator. Sow 1/4” deep in pots with 3-4 seeds each or seed trays filled with slightly acidic potting soil and place in a warm, bright area. Germination will be slow. Keep seedlings well-watered and transplant to their permanent location when several inches tall, after last frost.
